CROSS-TRAINING FOR DANCERS

To raise the standard of care, knowledge and athleticism for dancers everywhere.

In my experience being apart of FSU’s collegiate dance team Seminole Dance Force and the professional dance communities in both Los Angeles and New York, I’ve seen that most dancers don’t have a strong knowledge base of how to take care of their bodies or what they can do aside from dancing to improve their ability. They simply just never had the resources to learn.

How do you ask for what you don’t know you need? It is easy for other athletes to have access to cross-training in a weight room or recovery care from athletic trainers because it is built into the culture of their sports.

I am looking to start building this same kind of culture within our community in my own kind of way: through giving dancers knowledge about strength and conditioning and resources to help them take care of their bodies. This is not only about performance, but also about longevity and sustainability in our craft.
Dancers should have personal trainers to guide their collegiate teams and feel comfortable in the school weight room.
Dancers should have athletic trainers and strength coaches with them on the road on tour.
Dancers should have access to professionals who understand the kind of movement we do when we get injured.
Dancers should have the resources to learn what they can do to train their bodies for strength, power, and endurance.
I want a better future for our craft and our community. Dancers deserve the same respect and care as other artistic and athletic professionals, and that begins with the standards WE set as dancers are coming up. What better time to learn than at the developing and pre-professional stages of a dancer’s journey.
My goal is to equip teachers, coaches and dancers themselves with the tools to understand and implement cross-training, which will serve them throughout their entire dance career and life.
